For the Love of Print

ABOUTImageA copy.jpg

My professional career is in graphic design and printing (we offer color management services.) Printing wants to portray life, society, communication, often at the service of corporations and government. The neatest, finest print promises the best results, whether these bring more sales or achieve better persuasion. Precise printing is a statement of fact. That's true of various commercial printing methods including stochastic printing with an inkjet. And not so true with non-commercial printing techniques because they are most often not precise. The comparison is most obvious with 4/color silkscreen printing.

My work explores the juxtaposition of inkjet and silkscreen printing as one is rigid and the other fluid. In some of the work, accidents and inconsistencies are invited. In others, silkscreen tries to be like inkjet but never really manages. This neighboring of precise and fluid creates an ambivalence in how the printed image is viewed.

This ambivalence, uncertainty or question explore the connection between social and political settings and events. An image of a masked man (Urban Chameleon) is not longer just an image. It poses questions about how this man fits in his environment, what he's thinking, and how those around him accept him. Grief for a beautiful friend who has died manifests itself in the gradual disintegration of a perfect inkjet portrait. This is how I want to present the uncertainty of our world, politically, socially, and personally.

History

I was born in Belgium and grew up near Antwerp. I graduated with a BFA from the Ecole de Recherches Graphiques in Brussels. After working a few years in Brussels, I moved to the US and lived in different places until settling in Santa Cruz, California.

Art took a back seat for a few decades while the mind and the body matured. I have so much to tell today and devote most of my free time to creating art combining photography, inkjet printing, and silkscreen. The mix of these media is a metaphor for who I am, a bit of everything that built careers, relationships, loves and beliefs.
